Oman Drydock Co. Football Team Wins Duqm Refinery Cup

The Duqm Refinery Cup, now in its second year is an annual football event organized by Duqm Refinery in the wilayat of Duqm. The cup matches were played over three days, starting last week on 12 December, 2016 in the indoor sports hall of the Oman Drydock Company. Duqm Refinery Cup followed a six-a-side knock out format and had 14 registered teams, an increase from the 12 teams that were featured last year.
Finally the team of Oman Drydock Co. emerged as winner of Duqm Refinery Cup 2016. Ras Madraka was the runner up while Haitam team secured the third place.
After a well contested first round that featured lots of goals, eight teams emerged into the second round of the tournament. Of these eight teams, Haitam, SEZAD, Ras Madraka, and Oman Drydock Co. qualified to the semi-finals. Eventually Oman Drydock Co. and Ras Madraka emerged as the best teams and made it to the finals.
“As with the rest of Oman, football is very popular in Duqm” said Jasim Al Ajmi, Corporate Communication & CSR Manager at Duqm Refinery on the occasion of the prize distribution ceremony. He further added that “the Duqm Refinery Cup serves not only as a platform for the youth to showcase their talents in, but also serves as a platform that brings the neighboring communities of Duqm, the companies and organizations operating there along with fans together in a spirit of brotherhood and camaraderie. He concluded that “Our support towards football goes beyond just organizing tournaments, we are investing in the individual as well as the sport by supporting training programs and camps along with support towards sporting facilities and infrastructure.
The finals of the Duqm Refinery Cup was well attended by not only fans, but also by local sheikhs and other dignitaries. The guest of honor at the finals and the prize distribution ceremony was Sheikh Taher Bin Mabkhoot Bin Ali Al Junaibi, member of the Shura council and representative of Wilayat of Duqm.
Issa Al Ismaily from the Oman Drydock Company’s team won an award for the highest scorer and Mohammed Al Junaibi of Ras Madraka won an award for the ‘best player’ of the tournament.
