Sponsoring Environmental Society of Oman’s (ESO) research efforts

OQ8 along with other companies in OQ signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) to support Marine Turtle conservation on Masirah Island.

The project aims to collect nesting data, build the capacity of ESO Field Assistants and engage with the local community through education and awareness campaigns to inform them about the importance of turtles as essential components of a healthy environment in Oman.

Masirah Island is home to the world’s largest population of nesting Loggerhead Turtles as well as providing nesting grounds to other species including Green, Olive Ridley, and Hawksbill Turtles. All four species have been classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). ESO has tagged Loggerhead turtles to monitor their migration and nesting patterns and has taken part in collaborative global research projects to increase understanding of the population of turtles living in Oman’s coastal waters.
